6 Habits That Harm Your Teeth (And How To Break Them)

“A smile is a curve that sets everything straight”

Like everything else your pearly white smile requires care and protection. You brush your teeth twice a day to keep that smile intact, but at times you overlook these daily habits that harm your oral hygiene. So, we have compiled a list of 6 harmful habits for your teeth and how to break them-

1. Brushing too hard- It is a popular belief that brushing hard and fast is good for teeth cleaning and plaque removal. On the contrary it can cause irritation in the gums and damage teeth enamel.

Brushing at a moderate pace, for two minutes, twice a day is the best. Switch your hard bristled toothbrush for a softer one.

2. Constant snacking- If you find yourself continuously grazing between meals, consider the harm it is causing to your teeth. Consistent snacking is the most common cause for decay and cavities.

Eat three full, well-balanced meals and try to cut back on snacking. And when you do snack opt for fresh vegetables and non-sugary snacks.

3. Using tobacco- This includes both chewable tobacco and cigarettes. This is the most dangerous habit for you oral hygiene. Tobacco not only increases risk for mouth cancer, it can permanently ruin your teeth and gums.

Well, the only way to get rid of this habit is to quit. You can try the nicotine chewing gum to help you stop using tobacco.

4. Jaw clenching and teeth grinding- These can cause wear and tear in teeth, jaw pain and misaligned jaw. Teeth grinding is most difficult to break as it results from subconscious behavior (usually during sleep).

Consult your dentist for a mouth guard to ensure your teeth are safe from damage.

5. Chewing on ice- Biting ice is very tempting, but they are too hard for your teeth to handle. They can even cause breakage of enamel. It is also not healthy for your mouth to be constantly exposed to icy temperatures.

Avoid chewing on ice, opt for smaller and finer pieces. For munching needs you can also switch to vegetables and other healthy foods.

6. Drinking sugary and alcoholic drinks- Cold drinks and alcoholic beverages have high sugary and acidic content, which leave our teeth prone to cavity, tooth sensitivity and enamel deterioration. Alcohol consumption also leads to a dry mouth which leads to harmful oral bacteria.

You can switch to juices with no added sugar or water. They will keep you hydrated and fresh for long with no harm.

Do not skip out on your routine dental checkups and consult your dentist for all your oral problems.
